This 1/48 Shinkai 6500 Manned Research Submersible plastic model is a great new kit in Bandai's Exploring Lab series! Includes LED lighting and five figures (three crewmen and two swimmers). Molded in multiple colors. Requires 3 LR44 batteries for the LEDs. Detailed instructions are provided with plenty of reference photos (all in Japanese). (Text courtesy HLJ).

5 Stars A great kit!

I can't add much to the great review above but this kit fits together like a dream. The only minor gripes I could have is that the pre-colored plastic parts, even white, suffer from swirls and the front baskets are molded solid instead of having plastic or wire screen mesh but are an easy fix along with some very minor sink holes near the outer white aft end but are easy fills and as stated above everything is in Japanese but there are some great color pics with the kit along with round paint chips and I found some great reference pics on the JAMSTEC site. This is the older version single aft Screw version of the Shinkai 6500 and the single large Screw has been replaced by two smaller Screws on the Port and Starboard sides but I will not bother with those.I highly recommend this great kit with lots of removable parts, five figures, and a led lighting system and have seen this kit almost double in price than in the SSM store and was worth every penny to me for a very well engineered kit.Buy this kit,you won't be sorry!

5 Stars In-box review
by Ken Lilly on Mar 31, 2012
Got mine today, only 2 days from IL to VA. Very nice kit, surface detail is amazing, as someone else posted about the kit last month it's a "detail painters dream." Parts breakdown is very well thought out, the hatch over the LED power supply is removable so the entire power unit can be removed, the power cables to the LED's are connected via a pinned connection like on PC hard drives so you can remove the power unit and still leave the LED's in the model. Another nice touch is that after assembly you can remove parts of the outer hull and pressure sphere to show the crew compartment. And the crowning touch (to me) is that you install the support bracket for the stand and then cover it with a part of the outer hull, to mount the model on the stand you remove said hatch and there's a compartment for it on the base of the display stand so you don't lose it. Instructions are all in Japanese with part number call outs, if you can follow instructions I don't foresee it being a problem. Another very nice touch is an impression of a large crab on one of the sprues, apparently you can use it as a mold to make a casting and put the casting in the sample container, that's my guess anyway since I can't read Japanese. Only problem I have with the instructions is that the color standards are all in Japanese, I don't know which brand they're referencing, most of the colors can be matched by eye I think, there are mixing instructions for a few but without a reference paint line I don't know what to mix. In the end very nice kit and worth it if you're interested in the subject or want something different from your usual builds. (kit courtesy of my wallet)
