The Focke-Wulf Triebflügel (or Triebflügeljäger, literally meaning "thrust-wing hunter") was designed by the Germans during the final phase of World War to be a point-defense interceptor for critical infrastructure.  Three straight wings with gradually decreasing pitch towards the wingtips, each topped by a Pabst ramjet, rotated around the fuselage to act as a giant rotor/propeller.  The plane was to take off and land vertically and transition to/from forward flight to chase down Allied bombers.  Because the fighter would have had to maintain a slight “nose-up” attitude in flight, its armament (of two MK 103 30mm cannon with 100 rounds plus two MG 151/20 20mm cannon with 250 rounds) was angled down.

No prototype ever flew, but a wind-tunnel model was tested up to a speed of Mach 0.9 before the end of the war.

Mini-Art’s second entry in their “What-If…?” series consists of 12 injection-molded styrene sprues (one clear), a small photoetched brass fret, and silk-screened waterslide decal sheet. Wings and powerplants are positionable and may be left to rotate after assembly.  Gun bays may be displayed open or closed, and detailed cannon are provided.  Landing gear may be extended or retracted (though no display stand is provided for an “in-flight” pose.  Markings are provided for six different hypothetical versions, including a Kriegsmarine machine (!). A comprehensive assembly manual and full-color painting/marking guide round out the package.

At 1/35 scale, this beast will stand over 10”/ 254mm tall – with a wingspan over 14”/ 356mm – when completed.
